Over the years I have dreamed of fishing for sharks at night because it has being proven that they are more active at that time. In one day I have landed 19 sharks, I was imagining how many sharks could I have landed if I was fishing that night.
As the weather was settled for the last few days and nights I got a phone call of my friend Ross to see was I available to go on a night charter trip for sharks. With a chance of what I have dreamed about, I look at my finances and with the green light from my missis I was good to go. I got my shark gear and food supplies sorted for the long night that I had a head of me. As I arrived at the boat around 7.30pm I had to get my food and gear on board as fast as I could and got ready for my 30 mile journey. Our target fish was a thresher shark but that was unlikely, we were more likely to catch blues. With the anticipation of large sharks in my minds it seemed to make the journey to the 30 mile mark painless. After two and a half hours traveling the skipper slowed the boat and then put it into natural so he could keep the high powered deck lights on. It was now time to put out the rods and the pre-made chum bags. It only took twenty minutes before we were into our first shark it was a blue around 30lb and as that shark was in the boat my reel screamed off. As I was fighting the shark I taught it was about the same size as the one that was landed until the skipper got his hands on the leader, he pulled the shark to the surface. it was only then that we could see that it was at least seven feet long. With the light of the boat hitting the shark it woke up and dove
As is was stripping line of my reel I knew I had a fight on my hands, I had to work hard to get the shark to the boat and as the light hit it again it went back down, this happened a few times more before the trace could be grabbed
With the shark under control and a rope put around its mid-section and tail, it was then we could lift it on board. It was my first blue shark at night, what a feeling being out on the sea unknowing was there big sharks swimming around the boat.
We had over 15 sharks that night but none as big as the ones I was dreaming about, maybe next time with some luck. I did a short video of the two largest sharks that were landed on the boat click on the link below.
