As the seas have settled I decided to wipe the cobwebs of my beach casters and do a bit of doggie fishing with the hope of a ray. The basic set up for dogs is a 12ft beach rod a fixed spool reel loaded with 15 lb line that is tided to 50lb shock leader, a tripod is very handy as well when you are fishing areas were you can’t find a place to rest your rod.
My rods on my tripod ready for action.
Two up or one up one down are the way to go when fishing for dog fish
The bait I use is sand eel and mackerel, sand eel can be cut in half or treaded on full then warped it with elastic. Cut the mackerel into 3in strips about an inch thick and like the sand eel wrap it well with elastic. Dog fish are good fun if you are thinking about taking up sea fishing. If you catch one watch out for there tail, they have a habit of wrapping it around you hand and as there are doing that it will take your skin off like sand paper would. When I un-hook a dog fish I will bring its tail to it head and with the hand I use less I then grab the tail and head together so the fish cant move. I then take the hook out with pliers
Dog fish are good fun, put them back alive
Until next time
