A good day fly fishing for Pike
Sidney Kennedy with a 25lb Pike
It’s only been 14 months since I took up fly fishing for Pike and the only thing I regret is that I never took it up sooner. I have a love for dead baiting and lure fishing for Pike however when I got my first hit on the fly I was hooked like a Pike. As I was using my friends “Terry Jackson’s” fly rod, I knew I had to buy one. I decided on an AIRFLO Bluetooth NAN-TEC 9ft fly rod; it’s lovely to cast and has lots of power to set the hook on a strike. I matched it with an AIRTEC fly reel with fast sinking fly line and plenty of backing. All I had to do is add a lent of 50lb fluorocarbon line, titanium trace and a fly. The day I landed that 25lb fish it was pure luck or should I say the right place at the right time. That day I was driving along the river when I seen a scatter of Roach fry and a big swirl beside it. I parked up my Jeep as quick as I could and grabbed my boots and fly gear and headed to the spot. With in a few cast I was hitting jack Pike and I taught that must have been what was chasing the fry until I was hit by that cracking pike the water erupted and started towards the far bank as the striped fly line cleared all the eyes I could now fight her on the reel. It did not take long to get her under control with the rod I was using and with the assistance of my son Derick on the net the fish was landed.
